Funny you mention the paintable raceways—I’ve tried them in a client’s place and, honestly, even with three coats they still stood out like a sore thumb against walnut paneling. If you’re really set on hiding wires, I always suggest mapping out your layout first (which you nailed), then see if you can run things behind baseboards or crown molding. It’s not as invasive as opening up walls but looks way cleaner than raceways. And yeah, future-proofing is the hill I’ll die on... nothing’s worse than realizing you need to pull another cable after everything’s finished.

- Totally agree on the raceways—tried them in my last place and even after sanding and painting, they just looked... off.
- Running wires behind baseboards sounds way less stressful than cutting into walls, but I’m a bit worried about damaging the trim or making a mess.
- Did you find it added much to the cost compared to just using surface raceways? I’m trying to keep things tight budget-wise but still want it to look decent.
- Also, future-proofing is smart, but how do you decide how many extra cables or conduits to run? I always overthink it and end up with way more than I need.

I totally get the struggle with wanting things to look clean but not wanting to blow the budget. I’ve wondered the same about baseboards—like, is it really worth the risk if you’re not super handy? Sometimes I think raceways are ugly, but at least they’re easy to undo if you mess up. For future-proofing, I always end up running a couple extra cables “just in case,” but then I never use them... Maybe it’s better to just plan for what you actually need now and not stress too much about the what-ifs.

Totally relate to the cable dilemma. I went overboard with “future-proofing” and now have a tangle of unused wires hiding behind my couch. Honestly, sometimes simple is better—clean lines, less stress. You’re right, it’s easy to overthink it.

Funny thing, I’ve seen folks spend a small fortune on “future-proofing”—running HDMI, coax, Cat6, speaker wire... you name it. Half the time, five years later, tech’s changed and those wires just collect dust bunnies. I get the urge to plan ahead (I’ve been burned by not thinking forward), but I’ve also torn out more unnecessary cable than I care to admit.

Honestly, I lean toward running a couple of conduits in the wall if you’re really worried about upgrades. That way, you can fish new stuff through when you actually need it. Otherwise, yeah, simple usually wins. Less mess, less headache when you want to move a couch or swap out gear.

Sometimes the “what if” mindset just makes everything more complicated than it needs to be. There’s a balance somewhere between being prepared and just making life harder for yourself...
