Totally agree about the vintage trunks—there’s just something about real wood and old hardware that makes even clutter feel intentional. I’ll admit, I tried to “upgrade” to a designer ottoman once and it was a total letdown. The trunk’s still here, the ottoman’s long gone. On plants: snake plants are solid, but have you ever tried a ZZ plant? Practically immortal, and looks a bit more sculptural. Also, moving furniture is my guilty pleasure... sometimes I’ll rearrange at midnight just for the thrill of it. It’s like getting a whole new apartment without spending a dime.

Can’t argue with that—rearranging stuff is way cheaper than buying new furniture, and honestly, sometimes it just feels necessary. Quick question though: have you ever regretted a midnight move and woken up wondering what you were thinking? I did that once and ended up blocking my closet. Also, what’s your take on open shelving? I’m always torn between “looks cool” and “looks messy.”

Midnight rearranging is a whole vibe until you wake up and realize you shoved your bed right under the only window that opens... been there, regretted that. As for open shelving, I’m firmly in the “looks cool if you’re a minimalist” camp, but for most of us, it just ends up being a dust magnet and a place to display our clutter. Have you ever tried mixing closed cabinets with a couple open shelves? I find that’s the sweet spot—best of both worlds. Curious if you’ve found any tricks for keeping open shelves from looking chaotic?

Funny you mention that—I've actually designed a few spaces where we did just that, and it really does help balance things out. But I’ll admit, even with a couple open shelves, I end up fussing over what goes on them. I try to keep it to things I actually use or stuff that looks intentional, but somehow random mugs and keys sneak in anyway. Ever tried using baskets or trays on open shelves to corral the chaos, or does that just defeat the purpose?

I actually think baskets or trays can work, as long as you don’t overdo it. Keeps things tidy but still lets you show off a few nice pieces. I’ve used small wire baskets for keys and mail—looks intentional, not cluttered.
