WHEN YOU THINK YOU KNOW BETTER THAN YOUR LAWYER

That rings true for me. I remember one reno where we all just wanted to keep things simple—no fuss, just trust. Worked fine until a supplier suddenly disappeared with our deposit. Turns out, my lawyer had slipped in a clause about payment milestones. Saved us a lot of headaches. I still prefer hashing things out face to face, but man, those “just in case” legal bits have bailed me out more than once. Sometimes feels like overkill, but when things go south, you’re glad it’s there.

I get where you’re coming from. I’ve had projects where I thought the legal review was just slowing things down, but then a minor clause about indemnity ended up saving us from a massive claim. It’s easy to underestimate those details until you need them. Still, sometimes I wish the paperwork wasn’t so dense—feels like you need a translator half the time.

I’ve definitely tried to cut corners on legal fees, thinking “how hard can it be to read a contract?” Turns out, pretty hard when you’re not trained for all that jargon. I once skimmed over what I thought was a standard clause—ended up costing us extra down the line. Still, it’s frustrating paying by the hour for what feels like endless paperwork. There’s gotta be a middle ground between airtight legalese and something a normal person can understand…

I’ve been there—thought I could just tweak a design contract myself to save time. Missed a clause about intellectual property and it got messy when the client wanted to reuse my drawings elsewhere. It’s wild how one overlooked sentence can change everything. I get the frustration with legal fees, but now I just budget for it upfront. Still wish contracts were written in plain English though... half the time I’m translating for my team anyway.

- Totally get this. I’ve had to walk my project managers through “force majeure” clauses more times than I can count.
- Legal fees sting, but missing a zoning or indemnity clause stings way more.
- Curious—has anyone tried using those online contract templates? I’ve found they’re hit or miss, especially with land deals where every site is different.
- Anyone else ever push back on a lawyer’s advice and end up regretting it? Sometimes I wonder if they overcomplicate things just to justify the bill...
