Sink fixtures driving me nuts lately
I hear you - been there with those “designer” fixtures that look cool but are a pain once you actually have to clean or fix them. One time I installed this waterfall faucet that clogged up constantly from our hard water. Looked awesome, but I was cursing it every few months. Now I just go for stuff I know I can take apart with basic tools... boring maybe, but my sanity’s worth it.
- Been there - installed a super sleek matte black tap for a client, looked amazing... until fingerprints, water spots, and grime showed up like magic.
- Cleaning it was a nightmare. Ended up swapping it for a basic chrome one that actually wipes clean.
- Honestly, sometimes “boring” just means functional. I’ll take that any day over scrubbing tiny crevices with a toothbrush.

That’s honestly the dilemma, isn’t it? I’ve specified matte black and brushed brass for clients who wanted that “wow” factor, but the maintenance is never what they expect. I do wonder - has anyone found a finish that actually balances style and easy cleaning? I’ve had mixed luck with brushed nickel, but even that can show streaks if you’re not careful. Sometimes I think we’re just trading one hassle for another.
I hear you on the “wow” finishes being a pain. I got sucked into the matte black trend for our bathroom and, honestly, it looks amazing... for about five minutes after cleaning. Then it’s just fingerprints and water spots everywhere. I’ve had better luck with plain old chrome - yeah, it’s not super exciting, but at least I don’t have to baby it. Sometimes boring really is the way to go if you’re not into constant upkeep.
I get why chrome is the fallback, but honestly, I can’t go back to it after having brushed nickel in my last place. It hides fingerprints and water spots way better than either chrome or matte black, at least in my experience. Plus, it’s got a bit of warmth that chrome just lacks. I guess it depends on how much you care about the look versus the maintenance, but for me, brushed finishes are the sweet spot - low drama but not boring. Anyone else feel like chrome just screams “builder grade” these days?
