Need some green thumb wisdom for chilly winters
Okay, every year I get super excited about gardening and then winter hits me like a truck, lol. I'm tired of watching my lovely plants freeze their little leaves off. I live in a place where winter temps drop pretty low (think Midwest US type cold). Anyone got suggestions for plants or shrubs that can tough it out through harsh winters? Preferably something easy to care for...um, you know, for someone who's not exactly an expert gardener.

For the “Midwest-type cold” winters you mentioned, check each plant’s hardiness-zone rating against your specific location before choosing it. It’s a useful first screen for whether a plant can survive typical winter lows, but it doesn’t guarantee success: sun exposure, soil, and drainage still matter.
For dependable winter structure, red-twig dogwood can suit a moist spot, while ninebark is a better fit for well-drained soil. Both are native shrub options worth considering for a Midwest garden; which kind of spot do you have more of?
Light exposure can narrow the choices, too: hardy daylilies often suit full sun, hostas do well in partial shade, and wild ginger can work in deep shade. They’re all perennial options, but care needs vary by cultivar, especially for moisture. How much sun does the planting area get?
