Letting fixed details guide the interior style

When windows, ceiling details, or built-in cabinetry are already set, how much should they influence the interior style? I can see why someone might choose furniture, lighting, and finishes that work with those features, but it’s less clear when changing trim or cabinet finishes would make a real difference versus just imitating a reference image at considerable cost.

Which fixed features tend to anchor a room, and where do furnishings and finish choices have enough flexibility to shift its character without making everything feel mismatched?

Compare the proposed change with the room’s most visually prominent fixed features. If the built-ins or trim dominate the view, changing their finish can reset the palette; if they’re less prominent, repeating one of their tones in furnishings or lighting may shift the room’s character for far less cost.
