Ever had a surprise cost turn into an opportunity? Like, fixing up a property and realizing you could add value while you’re at it?

Definitely—sometimes those unexpected repairs are the push I need to tackle improvements I’d been putting off. I’m with you on the buffer, but I also map out potential upgrades in advance. Keeps things from feeling too chaotic when stuff hits the fan.

I get where you’re coming from, but sometimes I think people over-plan and miss out on creative solutions. When a surprise cost pops up, I look at the space with fresh eyes—maybe that leaky pipe is the excuse to finally open up a wall or add built-ins. It’s chaos, sure, but it’s also where the best ideas sneak in.

I get the appeal of turning a problem into an opportunity, but honestly, that approach stresses me out. Last year, I tried “embracing chaos” when my bathroom ceiling started leaking. Ended up doubling my costs because I kept adding little upgrades. In hindsight, sticking to my original plan (and budget) would’ve saved me a lot of headaches. Sometimes, creative solutions just mean more expenses...

Honestly, I get where you’re coming from. It’s tempting to see a setback as a chance to upgrade, but those “while we’re at it” decisions can snowball fast. I’ve seen plenty of folks go down that road and regret it later. Sticking to your original plan isn’t boring—it’s just smart, especially if you want to keep your finances in check. There’s always going to be another project down the line... no need to tackle everything at once.

I learned the hard way during my bathroom reno—what started as a simple tile replacement turned into a full plumbing overhaul. I almost added heated floors “while we’re at it,” but stopped myself. Sticking to the essentials saved me from blowing my budget. It’s not always easy, but I’d rather finish one thing right than half-finish three.
