Need ideas for making my deck less visible to neighbors

So, my deck is pretty nice and all, but lately I've noticed my neighbors can see right onto it from their upstairs window. Kinda awkward when I'm just trying to chill with a book or have friends over. Thought about planting some tall shrubs or maybe installing some kind of privacy screen thingy, but I'm not sure what's best or easiest. Anyone tried something similar or got suggestions that worked well?

Had a similar issue at my old place—neighbors had this huge window overlooking our deck, felt like we were on display half the time. We ended up planting bamboo along the fence line. It grows super fast and creates a nice natural barrier without feeling too closed-in. Just make sure you get the clumping kind, not running bamboo, or you'll be dealing with it popping up everywhere. Worked great for us, and honestly, the rustling sound in the breeze was kinda relaxing too...

Good call on the clumping bamboo—I've seen running bamboo take over entire yards, and it's not pretty. Another option I've used on a few projects is lattice panels with climbing vines like clematis or jasmine. They fill in nicely after a season or two and add some color and fragrance. Either way, sounds like you've got a solid solution going...and yeah, that rustling sound is surprisingly soothing.

Clumping bamboo definitely sounds like the safer bet. I once had a client who insisted on running bamboo for privacy, and despite installing deep barriers, we spent the next three years chasing down stray shoots popping up in the neighbor's driveway...lesson learned the hard way.

The lattice and vines idea is pretty neat too—clematis especially can look amazing once it fills in. Only downside I've noticed is that some vines can attract bees or wasps, which might be an issue if you're sensitive or have kids around. Have you had any trouble with insects hanging around your clematis or jasmine? Curious if anyone's found a vine that's both attractive and doesn't become a bug magnet.

Clumping bamboo is definitely the way to go if you're leaning toward plants. I've seen it used effectively on several projects—looks good, grows fast, and stays manageable. Agree with the warning about running bamboo, though; it's a nightmare to control. Another solid option is horizontal wood slat screens. They're straightforward to install, look clean and modern, and you won't have to worry about attracting insects or ongoing maintenance like pruning vines.
