Thinking about building a custom home—worth the hassle?

Planning ahead feels overwhelming, but little details like this probably save a lot of hassle (and money) down the road.

You nailed it—planning can feel like a lot, but those small details really do add up. I used to think extra outlets were overkill, but after living in a house where every charger fought for space, I changed my tune. Closets and mudrooms are perfect for keeping cords out of sight too. Honestly, I'd rather spend a bit more upfront than deal with drywall dust and electricians later.

I hear you on the outlets—never seems like enough, no matter how many you plan for. I’ve seen folks regret not adding more lighting too, especially in pantries or garages. It’s wild how those “little” things become big annoyances later. Curious if anyone’s ever regretted going overboard with features? Sometimes I wonder if there’s a point where it just gets excessive...

It’s funny—people always talk about not having enough outlets or lights, but I’ve actually seen a few folks go the other way and regret adding too many “extras.” I worked with someone who put in heated floors everywhere, including closets and guest bathrooms. Sounded great on paper, but the maintenance and electric bills became a headache.

There’s definitely a tipping point where features start to feel more like clutter or just unnecessary complexity. I wonder if anyone’s felt that way about things like smart home tech or built-in speakers? Sometimes it seems like the more you add, the more there is to break down the line.

Curious if people feel like there’s an ideal balance between comfort and simplicity, or if it really just comes down to personal preference (and maybe budget).

THINKING ABOUT BUILDING A CUSTOM HOME—WORTH THE HASSLE?

Totally agree, there’s a real risk of overdoing it with all the bells and whistles. I’ve seen friends get sucked into the “smart everything” trend, and half the time they’re troubleshooting apps instead of actually enjoying their space. Personally, I think it’s easy to underestimate how much mental bandwidth all this tech and extra features can eat up. For me, less is usually more—give me solid basics that work every time, and maybe one or two luxuries I’ll actually use. Otherwise, it just starts to feel like you’re living in a showroom instead of a home.

- Totally get what you mean about the tech overload.
- When we built ours, I thought I wanted all the gadgets... ended up using maybe two regularly.
- The rest just collect dust or need updates.
- If I could do it again, I’d focus on good insulation, solid windows, and a killer shower.
- Fancy stuff is cool until you’re resetting your thermostat for the third time in a week.
