Been thinking about building my own little custom place, nothing fancy, just cozy and practical. First step, I sketched out a rough floor plan myself (just pencil and paper, nothing fancy). Then I found this free online software to make it look more professional. Next, I talked to a local builder friend to get an idea of costs and materials. Um, now I'm kinda stuck deciding on materials—anyone got better tips or cheaper ways to go about this?

Totally agree with sketching it out first—it's surprising how much clearer things get once they're on paper. For materials, I'd suggest considering reclaimed wood or salvaged doors/windows. Often they're cheaper, add character, and are eco-friendly too. Also, think about prioritizing where quality matters most (like insulation and roofing) and maybe compromising a bit on interior finishes you can upgrade later...been there, it helps keep the initial costs manageable.

Sketching definitely helps, but I'd caution against relying too heavily on reclaimed materials for structural elements like windows and doors. Sometimes the hidden costs of refurbishing or retrofitting can outweigh initial savings...been down that road myself, and it wasn't always smooth sailing.

I get your point about hidden costs creeping in, but honestly, I think reclaimed materials can be worth the hassle if you're careful. We used salvaged windows in our sunroom, and yeah, it took some extra work—stripping paint, replacing seals—but the character they added was unmatched. Plus, environmentally speaking, it's a win too. Maybe it's more about balancing expectations and being selective rather than ruling reclaimed out completely? Curious how others have found their experiences...

Reclaimed materials definitely add character, but I'd say pick your battles carefully. For structural stuff, reliability and ease of use matter more. Maybe blend reclaimed accents with new basics to balance charm and practicality without blowing your budget.
