How do you know you're choosing wisely?

Just stumbled on this story about a guy who spent his entire savings investing in crypto after reading one article. Apparently, he saw some influencer hyping it up, and now he's lost nearly everything. Kinda makes me wonder... I mean, we all think we're making smart choices, but how do you guys personally figure out if you're truly informed or just following the crowd?
