OPEN SHELVES: LOVE-HATE RELATIONSHIP

Glass-front cabinets look nice, but honestly, they’re usually way pricier than open shelves or basic cabinets. I tried open shelves in my last kitchen to save money, but the dust drove me nuts. Ended up just sticking stuff in baskets - cheaper and hides the mess. Shelf depth is tricky too... sometimes you can’t even fit a dinner plate without it looking awkward.

I get the dust issue, but honestly, I think it comes down to what you store. If you only keep daily-use stuff on open shelves, it doesn’t really have time to collect dust. I measured my plates before installing shelves - ended up going with 12” deep so nothing sticks out awkwardly. Not as cheap as the shallow ones, but still way less than glass-front cabinets. Just takes a bit of planning.

Totally agree - open shelves are way less of a dust magnet if you’re actually using what’s on them. I’ve seen folks put their “fancy” dishes up there and then wonder why they’re wiping down plates every week. Deep shelves are smart too. I’ve had clients regret going too shallow... mugs hanging off the edge just look awkward. Planning ahead saves a lot of headaches.

Yeah, totally with you on the daily-use stuff. If it’s in constant rotation, dust barely stands a chance. One thing I’d add - think about what the shelves are made of, too. Wood with a natural finish can be easier to wipe down and feels warmer in the space. I’ve also found that staggering shelf heights helps with airflow and makes cleaning less of a chore. Deep shelves are key, but don’t forget to anchor them well... nothing like a shelf disaster to ruin your day.

Funny you mention anchoring - learned that the hard way when my “floating” shelf decided to float right off the wall. Took half my spice jars with it. I do love the look of open shelves, but man, they keep you honest about clutter. I’m with you on wood, though - nothing beats that warm, lived-in vibe.
