GLASS CABINETS VS OPEN SHELVES—WHICH ACTUALLY STAYS CLEANER?

Totally agree, there’s no magic solution here. I’ve noticed open shelves can actually look messier faster, but they’re also way easier to just swipe down with a cloth. Glass cabinets, on the other hand, hide dust but show every single fingerprint—especially if you’ve got little ones running around. I’ve seen people mix both, like glass uppers for display and open shelves for daily stuff. It’s all about what you can live with cleaning-wise... and honestly, what makes you happy to look at every day.

That’s been my exact experience. The fingerprints are relentless if you’ve got kids or even just cook a lot. I tried glass cabinets in our last kitchen and honestly, I was forever wiping them down after pasta night. Open shelves do collect dust, sure, but at least you don’t get those weird smudges that show up in the sunlight. One thing I’ll add—open shelves make it way easier to keep tabs on what you actually use, which means less clutter overall... at least in theory!

That’s such a good point about sunlight—those streaks can be brutal, especially if your kitchen gets a lot of natural light. I’ve noticed that with glass, even after cleaning, there’s always some spot you missed that pops up at the worst angle. But with open shelves, while you’re right about the dust, it’s usually a quick swipe and done.

One thing I’ve seen with clients is that open shelving tends to make people more intentional about what they display. If you’re only putting up dishes you actually use, it does help keep things from piling up. But I have to admit, for folks who aren’t super tidy, open shelves can end up looking a bit chaotic. Have you found a system for keeping yours organized, or does it just kind of work itself out over time? Sometimes I wonder if it comes down to personality more than anything else...

Honestly, I think you nailed it—it really does come down to personality. I’m a bit of a maximalist, so my open shelves are a mix of everyday plates and some quirky ceramics I’ve picked up over the years. What’s worked for me is grouping things by color or function, but it’s never picture-perfect. I do a quick tidy every week, but sometimes it gets a little wild... and I kind of like that lived-in look. There’s definitely no one-size-fits-all system.

I get the appeal of a lived-in look, but I’ll admit—open shelving drives me nuts if it gets too chaotic. I’m all for personality, but at what point does it just feel cluttered instead of curated? Ever tried mixing in some closed storage to balance things out?
