Title: Why does every stud seem to be warped these days?

I hear you on the engineered studs—pricey, but at least you know they’ll stay true. I’ve had jobs where I spent more time sorting than building, and it’s honestly draining. Still, I’ve found FSC-certified lumber tends to be straighter, though not perfect. Metal’s not my favorite either, but I’ll admit, for commercial spaces, it’s hard to beat for consistency. For home projects, though, I just can’t give up the feel of real wood, even if it means a little extra work.

Totally get what you mean about the feel of real wood—there’s just something about it, even when it’s a bit wonky. I’ve noticed the same thing with FSC studs being a bit better, but I still end up tossing half a pile aside sometimes. Had a reno last year where I swear every third stud looked like a banana. Makes me wonder if it’s the way they’re drying lumber now, or just pushing stuff out faster to meet demand. Metal’s fine for big jobs, but I miss the smell and weight of wood when I’m working at home.

I’ve noticed the same thing—last time I picked up a load from the big box store, I spent more time sorting than shopping. It’s frustrating when you’re trying to keep costs down and half the studs end up unusable or need extra work. Has anyone tried buying direct from a local mill or smaller supplier? Wondering if that actually helps, or if it’s just the same story everywhere now...

Totally get where you’re coming from. I ran into the same issue on my first framing order—felt like a waste of time and money. I did try a local lumber yard, and honestly, the quality was a bit better. Still had to sort, but fewer rejects. Not perfect, but it saved me some headaches. Seems like the big box stores just don’t care as much about storage or turnover.

Honestly, it’s wild how much time gets wasted picking through piles just to find a few decent studs. I’ve noticed the same—local yards are better, but not flawless. Part of the problem is lumber’s getting milled faster and dried less, so there’s more warping right from the start. Big box stores don’t help by stacking it poorly either. Sometimes I wonder if paying a little extra for premium is worth it, just to save the hassle...
