VENTILATION INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS LATELY

I totally get the frustration. We had similar issues with drafts making the place feel chilly, and honestly, it’s hard to know what’s “right” when even inspectors seem to disagree. I wonder if there’s some middle ground between comfort and just ticking boxes... It does make me question if these standards really fit every situation or if they’re just playing it safe.

- Totally hear you on the “chilly drafts” and inspectors not lining up. Sometimes it feels like each one’s got their own pet peeve.
- In my experience, the rules are often written for worst-case scenarios, not real-life homes. Makes it tricky when you’re trying to build something that *feels* good to live in, not just pass a checklist.
- I’ve found that talking through the intent behind the code with an inspector can help. Sometimes they’re open to creative solutions if you show you’re thinking about air quality and comfort, not just minimums.
- There’s also a lot of new tech out there—ERVs, smart dampers, etc.—that can balance things out, but not every inspector is up to speed.
- Honestly, half the time it feels like we’re building for the spreadsheet, not the people. I get why the rules are there, but yeah, it’s not always a perfect fit.
- Had a project last winter where we ended up adding manual controls just so the homeowners could tweak things themselves. Not code-required, but it made a world of difference.

Sometimes I wish there was a little more room for common sense, but until then... it’s a balancing act.

- Couldn’t agree more about the “spreadsheet vs. people” thing. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to compromise on a design just to satisfy some arbitrary code.
- The tech is great in theory, but if the inspector doesn’t get it, you’re back to square one. Had a client who wanted a super quiet ERV—inspector insisted on a louder, older model because it was “familiar.” Frustrating.
- Manual controls are a lifesaver, but honestly, most homeowners just want to set it and forget it. The codes don’t really account for how people actually live.
- I get the safety angle, but sometimes it feels like common sense gets left out of the equation.

- 100% with you on the “spreadsheet vs. people” thing. It’s wild how often design gets boxed in by code that doesn’t reflect real life.

Yep. Had a project where we spec’d a sleek, integrated vent hood—inspector wanted the clunky old style because it was “easier to check.” Makes no sense.
- Most clients just want to hit a button and forget it. Codes seem written for robots, not humans.
- Safety matters, but sometimes it feels like we’re designing for inspectors, not the people actually living there.

That hits the nail on the head. I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve had to explain to clients why their “smart” system needs a manual override just to pass inspection. It’s like we’re stuck in the past—designing for checklists, not comfort. I get that safety’s important, but sometimes it feels like common sense gets left at the door. Had an inspector once tell me, “If I can’t see it, it doesn’t exist.” Guess invisibility cloaks are out for now...
