- Tried the label sheets once—honestly, they peeled right off after a couple hours, especially when the ducts were dusty or cold.
- Blue tape’s not perfect either, but at least you can scribble over grime and still see it.
- Photos feel like overkill, but I guess inspectors have seen too many “trust me, it was there” stories.
- If someone invents a ductwork Post-it that actually sticks, I’m all in... until then, Sharpie and tape are my MVPs.

Sharpie and blue tape are my go-to as well, but I’ve had inspectors push back on tape fading or getting covered in dust after a couple weeks. Ever tried using metal tags with a paint pen? Not pretty, but they don’t budge. Curious if anyone’s had luck with anything more permanent that isn’t a total pain to install...

I’ve actually tried those metal tags on a couple of projects, and you’re right—they’re not winning any beauty contests. But I do like how they hold up when everything else gets grimy or peels off. The only thing that bugged me was trying to attach them in tight spots, especially around flex duct. Have you ever had issues with inspectors not liking the tags themselves? Mine seemed more annoyed by zip ties than anything else. I keep wondering if there’s some kind of sticker or label that’s more durable but still easy to slap on...

I've run into the same issue, especially when space is tight or the ductwork is awkwardly placed. The metal tags are tough, but they’re not exactly subtle. For labels, I’ve had decent luck with industrial-grade vinyl stickers—thermal printed, not inkjet. They stick surprisingly well even on slightly dusty surfaces and don’t fade much over time. Only downside is they can be a pain to remove if you ever need to update info, but at least inspectors haven’t complained about them yet. Zip ties, though... yeah, those always seem to get a side-eye.

That’s my main gripe with the vinyl stickers too—they’re basically permanent once you slap them on, especially if you go for the heavy-duty stuff. I’ve had to scrape off more than a few with a razor blade after a spec change. Honestly, I still prefer them over the metal tags, though. At least they don’t clang around or look like you’re tagging HVAC for wildlife tracking. And yeah, zip ties... I swear they multiply when you’re not looking.
