Struggling with ventilation inspection requirements lately
Yeah, I’ve run into the same thing with inspectors nitpicking photos. You think you’ve covered your bases, then suddenly it’s “can’t tell if that’s a half-inch per foot or not.” Honestly, I get why it matters - vent slope is huge for air quality and moisture - but the photo evidence rarely seems to satisfy anyone. I’ve started using a level in my shots, but even then, it’s hit or miss. The walkthrough idea would save time, but like you said, it’s not always doable with everyone’s schedules. Sometimes I wonder if video walkthroughs would help, but then you’re just trading one hassle for another...
Honestly, I feel your pain. I’ve had jobs where I thought I’d documented every angle, only to get a call about “unclear” slope or some other detail. It’s frustrating, especially when you’re trying to keep costs down and not make a dozen trips back just for more photos. Using a level in the shot is smart - I do the same, but yeah, sometimes it still doesn’t cut it.
I’ve tried video walkthroughs too. They help a bit, but then you’re dealing with file sizes, upload issues, and sometimes inspectors still want to see something different. It’s like there’s no perfect solution unless everyone’s on site at the same time, which almost never happens.
At the end of the day, I just remind myself it’s about safety and code, even if it feels like overkill. Hang in there - it’s a hassle, but you’re definitely not alone.
I hear you on the endless back-and-forth. Last year, I spent an entire afternoon crawling around a crawlspace just to get the “perfect” shot of a vent termination - level in frame, tape measure, timestamp, the works. Still got flagged for “angle uncertainty.” At this point, I half-joke that inspectors must have X-ray vision or something. It’s wild how much documentation is needed now. But yeah, like you said, safety’s the name of the game... even if it means my phone’s camera roll is 90% ductwork photos these days.
- Totally relate to the camera roll full of ductwork - mine’s a weird mix of vents and paint swatches these days.
- It’s wild how the requirements keep getting more detailed. Sometimes I wonder if the “perfect” angle even exists or if it’s just luck.
- I’ve had projects delayed over a missing timestamp or a blurry label. Frustrating, but I get why they’re strict.
- On the bright side, all this documentation does make it easier to track what’s been done, especially when clients start asking for proof down the line.
- Still, I wish there was a less tedious way to prove everything’s up to code... maybe one day we’ll get a magic inspection app?
Sometimes I wonder if the “perfect” angle even exists or if it’s just luck.
Honestly, I’ve started marking floor tape for camera spots after one project got held up over a half-inch of duct being out of frame. It’s tedious, but at least it’s one less thing to get flagged. Still wish there was an easier way...
