it feels like every jurisdiction has its own flavor of “must-have” docs.

That’s the understatement of the year. I swear, I’ve had projects in three neighboring towns and each one wanted a different set of paperwork for the exact same fan. One place even wanted a “certified airflow test” on a powder room vent—like, are we building a hospital or just trying to keep the mirrors from fogging up? I get that codes are tightening up, but it’s almost like inspectors are making it up as they go.

Honestly, I’m starting to wonder if half these requirements are even enforceable. Sometimes it feels like we’re just jumping through hoops because someone read a new article or went to a seminar. I’m all for healthy buildings, but there’s got to be a middle ground between safety and bureaucracy overload. Maybe if there was some kind of statewide checklist, we wouldn’t be playing this endless game of “guess what the inspector wants today.” Until then, I guess we just keep collecting PDFs and hoping for the best...

Title: Struggling with ventilation inspection requirements lately

Had a similar thing happen last month—one inspector wanted a “blower door” test on a single bath fan, which felt like overkill. I get wanting to raise the bar, but sometimes it’s just more paperwork for the same result. Would be nice if there was some consistency, honestly.

Honestly, a blower door test for a single bath fan sounds like someone’s just flexing their authority a bit too much. I get wanting to make sure everything’s up to code—especially in high-end builds where clients expect perfection—but sometimes it feels like we’re just jumping through hoops for the sake of it. Wouldn’t mind if they at least agreed on what’s actually necessary... Last year, I had three different inspectors give me three different answers about the same vent. Makes you wonder if they’re just making it up as they go.

STRUGGLING WITH VENTILATION INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS LATELY

I totally get where you’re coming from. Last time I did a bathroom reno, I swear the inspector’s checklist was longer than my shopping list for the whole project. It’s wild how much it varies—one guy wanted to see the vent in action, another just peeked and shrugged. Honestly, it can feel like a moving target, but hang in there. Sometimes you just have to laugh at how over-the-top it gets... keeps things interesting, I guess.

It’s honestly a bit of a circus sometimes. I’ve had projects where the inspector wanted to see every vent running, even in empty units, and then the next job, the guy barely glanced at the setup. There’s no real consistency, which drives me nuts. I get that they’re just doing their job, but it feels like you need a crystal ball to know what each one’s going to focus on.

One time, I had an inspector bring out a smoke pencil to check airflow—looked like he was performing a magic trick. Next project? Just a quick look and “looks good.” Makes planning tough when you don’t know if you’ll be there for five minutes or an hour.

I guess it keeps us on our toes... but man, I wish there was a standard checklist everyone actually followed. Would make life a lot easier (and probably save me a few headaches).
