I’m curious if anyone’s actually tried the disposable coveralls you see at hardware stores. They look flimsy, but maybe they’re less hassle than cobbling together makeshift gear.

Honestly, I was skeptical too, but those cheap Tyvek suits are worth it if you’re on a budget. They look like they’ll rip, but they hold up better than a taped-up hoodie, and you can just toss them after. For the shoes, I just use grocery bags over my socks before I put my boots on. Not glamorous, but it keeps the pink stuff out. Way cheaper than buying those boot covers.

I get the appeal of Tyvek suits, but I’ve had mixed results. They’re decent for a quick job, but if you’re crawling around for hours, especially in tight attic spaces, they can get pretty hot and tear at the knees. I actually prefer heavier reusable coveralls—yeah, they cost more up front, but you can wash them and they don’t shred as easily on nails or rough plywood. As for the grocery bags over socks trick, it works in a pinch, but I’ve had them slip off mid-project... not fun when you’re ankle-deep in insulation. Just my two cents—sometimes spending a bit more pays off in comfort and less itch later.

Couldn’t agree more about the Tyvek suits—one attic job in July and I thought I was gonna melt. The reusable coveralls are worth it, especially if you’re doing this more than once. And yeah, those grocery bags just end up bunched around my ankles every time. Sometimes you really do get what you pay for... hang in there, it gets easier after the first itchy week.

I keep looking at those Tyvek suits and wondering if they're really worth the price, but after my last attempt with cheap painter’s coveralls, I’m starting to think you’re right. The sweat factor is real though—how do you not just pass out up there? Has anyone tried just layering old clothes instead? I’m all for saving a buck, but I’m not sure my skin can handle another round of fiberglass roulette...

I’ve tried the “layer up with old clothes” trick and honestly, it’s a gamble. If you’re just poking around for a few minutes, maybe you get away with it. But crawling through insulation? That stuff finds every gap, no matter how many socks or shirts you pile on. I swore I was fine until I started itching like mad halfway through, and then it was all over—fiberglass everywhere, stuck to my arms, neck, even in my hair somehow.

Tyvek suits aren’t cheap but they’re basically a one-time investment if you’re careful with them. Yeah, you’ll sweat buckets, but it beats scratching for a week. I usually take breaks and chug water like I’m training for a marathon. If you’re really worried about heat, try working early in the morning or after sundown. Cheap painter’s coveralls are better than nothing, but they just don’t seal out the itch.

End of the day, depends on your pain tolerance and how much you value your sanity... For me, Tyvek wins by a mile.
