Cramped spaces and weird tile choices—anyone else?

- Totally get what you mean about not fighting the house’s quirks.
- I’m still figuring out if I like the “imperfect” look or if it just stresses me out.
- We have this weird corner in our kitchen where nothing lines up, and I keep wondering if I should lean into it with some funky tile or just try to hide it.
- Does anyone else worry that it’ll just look like a mistake instead of intentional?
- Handmade tiles sound cool, but are they hard to clean? That’s my main hesitation...

That’s such a relatable dilemma. I’ve actually seen some high-end kitchens where they totally leaned into the “off” angles with bold tile, and it looked intentional—almost like art. But I get the worry about it seeming like a mistake. Have you looked at zellige tiles? They’re handmade and a bit uneven, but in a way that feels luxe. I will say, they’re not as easy to wipe down as glossy subway tile, but honestly, unless you cook with a lot of oil, it’s manageable. Do you think the stress of cleaning would outweigh the fun of having something unique?

I’ve worked on a few small kitchens where the angles were just... odd. One client picked a matte, handmade tile with a wavy edge, and at first I thought it’d highlight the weird corners. But once it was up, it actually distracted from the cramped feel and made the space look intentional, almost cozy. Cleaning wasn’t as bad as expected—just needed a softer brush for the grout. If you’re not deep-frying every night, I’d say the unique vibe outweighs the hassle. Sometimes those “mistakes” end up being the best part of the room.

Interesting point. I’ve always worried that “unique” tile would just look like a budget fix, not a design choice. Did you find handmade tiles cost a lot more than standard ones? I’m trying to balance price with style in my own tiny kitchen, but it’s tough to justify spending extra if it’s just for aesthetics. Anyone tried cheaper alternatives that still give that cozy vibe?

I've run into the same dilemma on a few small units I’ve worked on. Handmade or “artisan” tiles definitely cost more—sometimes double or triple per sq ft compared to standard stuff. In one flip, I used regular subway tile but mixed in a few off-color pieces from a clearance bin. Looked intentional enough, and no one thought it was a budget move. If you keep the grout lines tight and the pattern simple, even cheaper tiles can feel pretty homey. Sometimes it just comes down to how you lay it out.
