Cramped Spaces And Weird Tile Choices—Anyone Else?

I’ve seen some of those “awkward” spaces turn into the best parts of a house, but I’ll admit, sometimes it’s just a mess. There was this one project where a client insisted on keeping a weird little alcove—looked useless on paper, but it ended up being their favorite spot for morning coffee. Still, I get a bit twitchy when things feel too haphazard. There’s a fine line between character and chaos, you know? Not every quirk is worth celebrating, but some do surprise you.

Funny how those odd corners or tile patterns can go either way. I’ve seen a cramped nook become a reading hideout, but sometimes it just feels... off. I guess it’s all about intention—quirky can work if there’s a purpose behind it.

CRAMPED SPACES AND WEIRD TILE CHOICES—ANYONE ELSE?

I once tried to turn a weird, leftover corner in my kitchen into a coffee bar. The tile was this wild blue-and-yellow checkerboard—looked like a kid’s playroom at first. But after adding some floating shelves and a vintage lamp, it actually became my favorite spot for morning coffee. Sometimes those odd spots just need a little story behind them, you know? Not every experiment works, but when it does, it feels pretty great.

I totally get what you mean about those odd corners. When we moved into our place, there was this tiny nook off the hallway with these bizarre, glossy green tiles—like, almost hospital green. At first, I hated it and thought about ripping them out, but honestly, demo is expensive and messy. Ended up putting a narrow bench and some hooks there, and now it’s where we dump bags and keys. It’s not Pinterest-perfect, but it works for us.

I actually think sometimes the weird tile or awkward space gives a house more personality. Not everything needs to be neutral or “on trend.” I know some folks would say just cover it up, but I kind of like having a spot that’s a little quirky. Makes the place feel lived-in, you know?

That’s such a smart way to make the most of a tricky spot. I actually think those “off” details can end up being the most memorable parts of a home. Sometimes people get so caught up in making everything match, but a little quirkiness keeps things interesting. I’ve seen clients lean into odd tiles with fun art or plants, and suddenly it feels intentional. Honestly, it’s way more unique than another all-white hallway.
