If you’re not seeing real progress, it’s not just bad luck.

This is spot on, but I’d push back a bit—sometimes “progress” isn’t always visible if you’re not on site every day. That said, radio silence is a huge red flag. I’ve had projects where the builder kept me in the loop about delays and it made all the difference. But when you’re left guessing, that’s when things spiral. Communication is everything, and honestly, if you’re chasing updates, something’s off.

Totally agree. I’d add—sometimes what looks like “no progress” is actually stuff like inspections or waiting for materials, which isn’t obvious unless you’re tracking the schedule closely. Did your builder ever give you a detailed timeline with milestones? That’s usually a good sign they’re organized. If not, that’s when I start to worry.

Builder's Timeline Keeps Shifting—Normal or Red Flag?

I’ve run into this a few times on projects, and honestly, it’s not always a red flag—though it can feel that way when you’re in the middle of it. On one renovation, the schedule shifted three times because of backordered tile and then again for a surprise electrical inspection. The builder kept me in the loop, which made all the difference. When there’s transparency about what’s causing delays, I find clients are much more understanding.

But if you’re left guessing, that’s when frustration creeps in. I do think a clear timeline with milestones helps set expectations, even if things change along the way. It’s not unusual for things to move around a bit, especially these days with supply chain hiccups. Still, if you’re always chasing updates or getting vague answers, that’s where I’d start asking more direct questions. Sometimes it’s just the nature of construction... but sometimes it’s a sign the builder’s juggling too much or isn’t as organized as they should be.

BUILDER'S TIMELINE KEEPS SHIFTING—NORMAL OR RED FLAG?

Honestly, if I had a dollar for every time a builder’s schedule slipped, I’d have retired by now. Delays are kind of baked into the process—weather, inspections, missing materials... you name it. But here’s what I always ask when the timeline shifts: Why? Is it a legit reason or just poor planning? Stuff like backordered tile or an inspector running late is one thing. If it’s “my crew didn’t show up again” or “I forgot to order windows,” that’s a different story.

I agree with you, transparency makes or breaks the experience. If you’re constantly getting vague excuses or radio silence, that’s a red flag in my book. But if you’re getting real updates and clear explanations, it’s probably just the usual chaos of construction. Still, if the project keeps slipping with no end in sight, I’d start pressing harder. At some point, you gotta wonder if they’re in over their head or just juggling too many jobs at once.

BUILDER'S TIMELINE KEEPS SHIFTING—NORMAL OR RED FLAG?

Had a similar thing happen when I was building my own place last year. The timeline kept stretching, but most of the time it was stuff like rain delays or waiting on permits. Once, though, my plumber just ghosted for a week—no heads up, nothing. That’s when I started getting nervous. Ended up switching to someone else and things smoothed out. Delays are normal, but if you’re not getting straight answers or the same issue keeps popping up, that’s when I’d start worrying a bit.
