I totally get where you’re coming from—after building our place last year, I found myself in the same spot, wondering if shifting dates were just par for the course or something to worry about. Delays do happen, but when the reasons get vague or start sounding like reruns, that’s when my patience runs thin.

One thing I learned: sometimes the builder’s just juggling too much and communication falls apart, even if the work’s still getting done. Other times, it’s a sign they’re losing control of the project. Pushing for specifics (even if it feels a bit awkward) usually clears things up fast.

You’re not being unreasonable by expecting clear answers. If they can’t give you a straight timeline or keep dodging your questions, trust your gut—it’s better to be a little pushy now than regret it later.

Builder's Timeline Keeps Shifting—Normal or Red Flag?

Honestly, shifting timelines aren’t unusual in construction, but there’s a line between normal delays and red flags. Weather, supply chain hiccups, or permit issues can all push things back, but you should always get a clear reason—not just “we’re running behind.” If your builder keeps giving you the same vague answers, that’s when I’d start pressing harder.

I’ve seen projects where the builder was just stretched too thin, and communication slipped. The work still got done, but it was stressful for everyone. On the flip side, I’ve also seen jobs spiral because the builder lost track of the schedule entirely. If you’re not getting straight answers, it’s not unreasonable to demand them. You’re paying for a service, not just hoping for the best.

Trust your instincts here. If something feels off, it probably is. Better to be a squeaky wheel now than deal with bigger headaches down the road.

BUILDER'S TIMELINE KEEPS SHIFTING—NORMAL OR RED FLAG?

I get where you’re coming from—delays are part of the game, but there’s a difference between a hiccup and a pattern. I’ve had projects where the builder’s “just a week more” turned into months, and it totally threw off my design install. It’s not just about patience; it’s about trust. Have you noticed if the quality of work is slipping along with the timeline, or is it just the schedule that’s off? Sometimes those go hand in hand, and that’s when I really start to worry...

BUILDER'S TIMELINE KEEPS SHIFTING—NORMAL OR RED FLAG?

- Had a similar situation last year—builder kept pushing back by “just a few days.”
- Ended up being almost two months late, and the punch list was still a mess.
- For me, it’s a red flag if the excuses start sounding recycled or vague.
- Minor weather delays? Sure, but when it’s always “waiting on a part” or “crew got pulled,” I get suspicious.
- If the finish work starts to look rushed, that’s usually when I step in and start asking tough questions...

BUILDER'S TIMELINE KEEPS SHIFTING—NORMAL OR RED FLAG?

Honestly, I see this a lot, and sometimes it’s just the nature of construction—stuff happens. But when the “just a few days” turns into weeks, and you start hearing the same excuses on repeat, my radar goes up too. I’ve had projects where a legit delay snowballed because nobody wanted to admit how far behind they really were. If the punch list is still a disaster at handover, that’s usually a sign they rushed or cut corners somewhere. I’d rather they be upfront about delays than try to gloss over them...
