Honestly, I get the frustration with smart bulbs flaking out, but I’ve seen plenty of “dumb” switches fail too—bad wiring, worn contacts, you name it. At least with smart stuff, sometimes you can fix things from your phone instead of tearing into a wall. Not perfect, but there’s a tradeoff either way.
- Had a couple of “dumb” switches go bad over the years—usually right when I didn’t have time to mess with it.
- Swapped to smart bulbs in the kitchen last year. Not perfect, but at least I can reset or update them from the couch.
- Price is still a pain, though. Waiting for sales or bundles helps, but I’m not swapping the whole house anytime soon.
Title: Finally Upgraded My Living Room Lights—Anyone Else Tried Smart Bulbs?
I just moved into my first place last fall and decided to try smart bulbs in the living room. Honestly, I was a little skeptical at first—felt like overkill compared to regular switches. But after dealing with a couple of old switches that kept sticking or just randomly stopped working, I figured it was worth a shot.
Setup was smoother than I expected, but I get what you mean about the price. Even catching a sale, it adds up fast if you want to do more than one or two rooms. I do like being able to dim the lights or change the color without getting up, especially when I’m half-asleep on the couch. Still, sometimes the app glitches or the bulbs don’t respond right away, which is kind of annoying.
Not sure I’d bother swapping every light in the house either. For now, just sticking with the main rooms where it actually makes life easier.

That’s honestly the main appeal for me too—convenience. But I keep wondering, does anyone ever actually use all those color options, or is it just a novelty at first? Also, have you noticed if your bulbs affect your Wi-Fi speed at all? I’ve heard mixed things.
FINALLY UPGRADED MY LIVING ROOM LIGHTS—ANYONE ELSE TRIED SMART BULBS?
Convenience is huge, no doubt. I actually use the color settings more than I expected—sometimes for movie nights, or just to set a different mood if I’m working late. But yeah, after the first few weeks, it’s mostly just warmer or cooler whites. As for Wi-Fi, I haven’t noticed any slowdown, but I only have a handful of bulbs. I guess if you had dozens, it might add up? Still, the energy efficiency is a nice bonus, especially if you’re trying to keep your footprint down.
