FINALLY UPGRADED MY LIVING ROOM LIGHTS - ANYONE ELSE TRIED SMART BULBS?

- Totally with you on the lag - nothing like standing in the dark waiting for a “smart” bulb to catch up.
- Hardwired switches are still king for reliability, but I do like the flexibility of scenes and automations when they actually work.
- If you’re building from scratch, running conduit or extra wire for future upgrades is a lifesaver. Did that in my last project and it’s made swapping tech way less painful.
- Matter sounded like the answer, but I’m still seeing random disconnects. Maybe in a year or two it’ll be smoother?
- Honestly, I keep a couple of old-school bulbs in a drawer just in case the tech decides to take a day off... learned that one the hard way.

I get the love for hardwired switches, but honestly, I think they can limit the creative side of lighting. Here’s what I did: I layered smart bulbs with smart switches, so you get the reliability of a physical switch but can still play with scenes and moods. It’s a bit more setup, but the payoff is worth it - especially if you’re into setting the vibe for different occasions. The lag is real sometimes, but with a solid mesh network, it’s barely noticeable. I’d say don’t give up on the tech just yet... it’s getting there.

I’ve been debating the smart bulb vs. switch thing for months. My main worry is what happens when someone flips the wall switch off - doesn’t that kill power to the smart bulb? Or am I missing a trick here? I love the idea of scenes, but I’m not sure I trust my family not to just use the old-school switch out of habit...

Yeah, you’ve got it right - if someone flips the wall switch off, your smart bulb loses power and can’t do anything “smart” until it’s back on. That’s a pretty common snag. Have you looked into smart switches instead? Or maybe those little magnetic switch covers to remind folks not to flip them? I’ve seen some people just retrain their family, but honestly, that’s hit or miss...

Honestly, this is why I’ve never fully bought into the smart bulb hype. The minute someone flicks that switch, you’re back in the Stone Age. Smart switches make more sense long-term, but even then, I’m not convinced they’re worth the hassle unless you’re gutting a place anyway. My family would 100% ignore “do not touch” signs... and retraining them? Good luck with that circus.
