Yeah, the neutral wire thing is a pain—ran into that in my own 60s place. I hear you on missing the physical switches. What’s worked for me is adding those stick-on wireless remotes that some smart bulb brands offer. They’re not perfect, but guests seem to get it quicker than yelling at Alexa. Also, totally agree about sticking to one brand... mixing Hue and Wiz was a headache I don’t want to repeat. And dimmers with smart bulbs? Learned the hard way—just don’t.

The neutral wire situation tripped me up too—my house is a patchwork of old and new wiring, so I had to get creative. I actually ended up using one of those battery-powered Lutron Pico remotes. It’s not exactly pretty, but it works and my parents don’t get confused when they visit. I do miss the tactile feel of a real switch though. Mixing brands was a nightmare here as well; I thought I could save a few bucks, but syncing scenes across apps was just... ugh, never again. And yeah, dimmers plus smart bulbs? Flickery mess.

I totally get this. I tried to mix and match some cheaper smart bulbs with my existing setup, thinking it’d be no big deal. Ended up spending way too much time fiddling with three different apps just to get the lights to turn off at the same time. Not worth the hassle, honestly.

Curious if anyone’s found a budget-friendly brand that actually plays nice with others? Or is it just better to bite the bullet and stick to one ecosystem? I’m also wondering about those battery-powered remotes—do they last long enough to make it worth not rewiring everything? My wiring’s a mess too, so I’m always looking for workarounds that don’t break the bank.

- Been there, and yeah, mixing brands is usually more trouble than it’s worth.
- Honestly, I’ve found sticking to one ecosystem saves a ton of headaches, even if it costs a bit more upfront.
- Some of those battery remotes are surprisingly decent—mine’s lasted over a year, and I use it daily.
- If your wiring’s a mess, those remotes are a lifesaver. Not perfect, but way less hassle than tearing into the walls.
- Don’t feel bad about experimenting—sometimes you gotta try things out to know what works for your space.

Couldn’t agree more with this. I’ve seen some real spaghetti behind drywall—sometimes you just don’t want to know what’s lurking back there. Had a client last year who wanted to swap out all their old switches for smart ones, but the wiring was a total mystery. Ended up using battery remotes and smart bulbs instead. Not as “clean” as hardwired, but honestly, it worked out better than expected.

Mixing brands, though... that’s where things get dicey. I tried to save a few bucks once by using a couple different brands in my own place, and the apps just wouldn’t play nice together. Ended up spending more time troubleshooting than if I’d just picked one system from the start.

Experimenting’s half the fun, though. Sometimes you stumble on a combo that just clicks for your setup. But yeah, if you can stick to one ecosystem, your future self will thank you.
