Had almost the exact same frustration when I was building out my workshop. I'd be sanding or quietly measuring something, and boom—darkness. Switched to occupancy sensors too, and it made a huge difference. Glad you found a setup that works...makes all the difference in productivity and mood.
Totally relate to this. Occupancy sensors are great, but I ended up going a slightly different route in my own workspace:
- Installed dimmable LED panels overhead—adjustable brightness is a lifesaver for detailed tasks.
- Added some task lighting at key workstations (table saw, sanding area, etc.). No more squinting or guessing measurements...
- Put a couple of lamps with warmer bulbs in the corners. Sounds weird for a workshop, but it really helps soften the harshness and makes it feel less like a sterile warehouse.
Funny thing is, I initially thought occupancy sensors would annoy me (I pace around a lot when I'm brainstorming), but after reading your posts, maybe I dismissed them too quickly. Might give them another shot in the storage area at least.
Either way, totally agree that good lighting changes everything—less eye strain, fewer mistakes, and honestly just makes working way more enjoyable.

Interesting you mention that—I tried warmer bulbs too, but found they skewed color perception when selecting finishes or paints. Did you notice any issues with color accuracy? Curious how others handle that...
I ran into that color problem too—picked out this gorgeous sage green paint under warm lighting, and the next morning it looked like mint toothpaste...lesson learned. Now I keep a separate daylight lamp handy just for color checks. Works pretty well so far.

Haha, been there too—mine turned into a weird hospital-ish blue-gray overnight. Did you find an affordable daylight lamp option? I'm still hunting for a budget-friendly one...
