Hidden switches are a pain—had to rewire my setup after smacking my knee one too many times trying to find the button under the desk. I’m with you on smart controls being finicky; I’ve had them freeze mid-meeting, so I keep a manual dimmer as backup. As for scenes, I’ve set up a few, but honestly, sometimes I just end up tweaking things manually depending on the time of day. Those stick-on dimmer dials are interesting—tried one at a client’s office, and it was handy, but I did notice it slid around more than I’d like. Anyone else find that, or maybe I just didn’t install it right?

Those stick-on dimmers can be a bit of a gamble. I tried one with 3M adhesive and it held up fine, but the generic brand I used in my garage kept sliding off whenever the humidity spiked. Might be worth checking if the surface was totally clean before sticking it on—any dust or oil can mess with the grip. Honestly, nothing beats a good old-fashioned wall switch for reliability, but I get the appeal of having controls right at your fingertips. Smart controls are great when they work... but man, when they glitch mid-project, it’s infuriating.

Totally agree about the stick-on dimmers being hit or miss. Here’s what I’ve noticed after a few installs:

- Surface prep is everything. Even a little residue from cleaning sprays can mess with adhesion, especially on painted drywall or textured surfaces.
- Humidity’s a killer for most adhesives. In basements or garages, I’ve had better luck with mechanical fasteners—tiny screws or even command hooks as backup.
- Wall switches are reliable, but sometimes you just need that dimmer within arm’s reach, especially if you’re moving around a lot. I get the appeal.
- Smart controls are awesome when they sync up, but yeah, nothing like having your lights randomly reset to “disco mode” in the middle of a Zoom call… not ideal.

One thing I’ve started doing is using plug-in dimmer modules for lamps—no adhesive, no wiring, just plug and play. Not as sleek, but way less hassle if you’re tweaking your setup often.

Plug-in dimmers are definitely the path of least resistance, especially if you’re moving things around or don’t want to mess with permanent installs. I’ve tried the adhesive stick-ons too, and I’ll second your point—if you skip the prep, they’ll fall off in a week, guaranteed. Mechanical fasteners are my go-to for anything semi-permanent, but I get that not everyone wants to put holes in their walls.

I’m not totally sold on smart controls for workspaces yet. The random resets and connection drops just aren’t worth it when you need consistent lighting for actual work. Maybe they’re better for mood lighting in a living room or something less critical.

One thing I’m curious about: has anyone actually tried running low-voltage wiring behind drywall for dimmers? I’ve seen some YouTube folks do it, but it seems like a hassle unless you’re already renovating. For me, if I can’t mount it directly to wood or studs, I usually just skip it and go with plug-ins or floor lamps.

Also—anyone have thoughts on color temperature? I find anything under 4000K makes me feel sleepy after a while, especially in the afternoons. Warm light is nice at night, but during the day it just kills my focus. Would be interested if others have landed on a sweet spot for productivity lighting...

- I get the hesitation with smart controls, but honestly, I’ve had fewer issues since switching to a wired smart dimmer. No batteries, no random disconnects—just works every time. Setup was a pain, but worth it for me.
- On color temp, I actually prefer 3500K for most of the day. Anything higher feels a bit harsh after a few hours. Maybe it’s just my eyes, but I get less glare and headaches that way.
- Running low-voltage behind drywall isn’t as bad as it looks if you’ve got access from an attic or crawlspace. Did it last year when I redid my office—took a Saturday, but now everything’s hidden and tidy. Not for everyone, but not impossible either.
