Switching to energy-saving bulbs: how many of your lights are actually LEDs?
I’ve switched almost every bulb in my place to LEDs, mostly because of the energy savings - my electric bill dropped a bit, which was nice. I did run into some weird color issues though, especially in my kitchen where the walls are a pale yellow. The first batch of bulbs made everything look kind of sickly. Ended up mixing in a couple warmer ones and it actually feels cozier now. Not perfect, but honestly, for the price, I’ll take it.

That’s a common issue - LEDs can be tricky with color temperature, especially against lighter wall colors like pale yellow. Mixing in warmer bulbs is a great solution. Sometimes, even just changing the CRI (color rendering index) makes a big difference in how natural things look. I’ve found that kitchens really benefit from a slightly warmer white, around 2700K to 3000K, rather than the cooler daylight bulbs. It’s not always about brightness, but how the light interacts with your space and finishes. Glad you found a combo that works for you.
Honestly, I still can’t get used to how some LEDs make a room feel like a hospital waiting area. I’ve swapped most of my fixtures to LEDs, but I keep a few old incandescents in the living room just because they don’t make everything look washed out. The energy savings are nice, but I’m not convinced every space benefits from that “daylight” look - especially in the winter when you want things to feel warm. Maybe I’m just stubborn, but sometimes old tech just works better for comfort.
I get what you mean - some LEDs just have that weird, sterile vibe. Have you tried the “warm white” ones? I’ve found a few brands that actually mimic incandescent pretty well, but it’s hit or miss. Is it just me, or do some LEDs flicker in a way you only notice when you’re trying to relax? Maybe I’m picky, but I still keep a stash of old bulbs for the bedroom and den... just feels cozier.
I get missing that old-school glow, but I’ve actually grown to love the newer LEDs - especially since I swapped out some of the cheap ones I started with. I had a bunch that flickered and felt almost hospital-like, but after trying a few dimmable “warm” models, it’s been way better. There’s this one lamp in my living room now that honestly feels just as cozy as the old bulbs, and my electric bill definitely noticed the difference. Maybe it’s worth experimenting a bit more? Some brands really do nail that warmth if you dig around.
