I hear you on the powder-coating—looks sharp at first, but it just doesn’t hold up to claws and teeth. I’ve tried stone veneer around the base, and honestly, it’s held up better than any mesh or screen I’ve used. It’s not cheap, though, and if you don’t get the install just right, critters will still find a way in. I’m with you on the plants—climbing vines are basically an open invitation for squirrels. Maybe a mix of low-profile hardscape and some tough, non-climbing shrubs could work? Not perfect, but it beats the “prison yard” look.
