- I swear, my car is basically a mobile filing cabinet at this point.
- Tried using an app to scan receipts, but half the time I forget and just shove them in my jacket pocket anyway.
- Colored folders sound organized... until you realize you left the blue one at the job site (yep, been there).
- My partner suggested a big envelope labeled “IMPORTANT STUFF”—it’s ugly but at least I know where to look when panic hits.
- Honestly, I think “controlled chaos” is just how it goes unless you’re some kind of paperwork wizard.

Yeah, “controlled chaos” sums it up. I’ve tried color-coding folders too, but if I don’t label them with the project name and date, I end up mixing up invoices. Has anyone tried using a binder with plastic sleeves for receipts? I wonder if that’s less likely to get lost than an envelope or random folder.

Binders with sleeves work better for me than envelopes—at least I can flip through and actually see what’s there. I still end up with a few rogue receipts in my truck, but it’s less of a mess. I also jot quick notes on the sleeve with a Sharpie, just to keep track of what’s what. It’s not perfect, but it beats digging through a pile of crumpled papers.

Totally get that. I tried the envelope thing for a while but always ended up losing track of what was inside. I use color-coded sleeves—one for each project phase—which helps when I’m juggling multiple jobs. Still, those stray receipts seem to multiply in my bag no matter what system I use...

Honestly, I tried the binder thing but it just felt like more clutter to lug around. Maybe I’m missing something, but isn’t it easier to just scan receipts with your phone as soon as you get them? I started doing that after losing a couple of important ones and it’s saved me a ton of headaches. Paper still piles up, but at least I know I’ve got a backup if something goes missing. Anyone else find digital works better, or am I just lazy?
