Color combos that oddly please the brain

Sometimes you just have to trust your gut and live with it for a week or two... worst case, it’s just paint.

This made me laugh because I literally stared at a teal swatch taped to my living room wall for three weeks before finally painting. It looked totally different every day, but now I love it. My partner thought I’d lost my mind at first, but honestly, the “just paint” mindset helped me chill out. Way better than agonizing over a dozen tiny sample pots.

That’s exactly it. I think people get way too hung up on finding the “perfect” shade, like there’s some secret formula that’ll make their space look like a magazine spread. But honestly, half the fun is seeing how a color changes with the light and your mood. I’ve painted entire rooms, hated them for two days, then suddenly couldn’t imagine them any other way.

Teal’s a bold move for a living room—props for sticking with it. I did something similar with a deep olive in my kitchen. My partner was convinced we’d made a huge mistake, but after a week of living with it (and seeing how good our wood shelves looked against it), he came around. Sometimes you just have to trust that gut feeling and let your eyes adjust.

I’m curious—did you pair the teal with anything unexpected? I’ve found that sometimes the weirdest combos end up being the most satisfying. Like, I never thought burnt orange and navy would work together, but now it’s my favorite corner of the house. There’s something about those oddball pairings that just feels right, even if they break every “rule” in the book.

Ever try a color combo that sounded terrible on paper but ended up working in real life?

I get what you’re saying, but honestly, I’m not sure I buy into the “just paint and see” approach every time. I’ve rushed into colors before, thinking I’d adjust, and ended up repainting a month later because it just never felt right. Sometimes those weird combos work out, but sometimes they’re just... weird. Ever regret sticking with something bold, or does it always grow on you?

Totally get this. I tried a deep teal with mustard trim in our dining room thinking it’d be “quirky,” but it just felt off no matter how long I waited. Ended up repainting after a few weeks. On the flip side, I was convinced I’d hate the blush pink in our guest room, but now it’s my favorite spot. Guess it’s a toss-up—sometimes your brain adjusts, sometimes it just can’t.

Funny how that works—sometimes a color combo just refuses to settle in, no matter how much you want it to. I’ve seen mustard and teal look amazing in some spaces, but it really depends on the light and vibe. Blush pink is such a sleeper hit... it’s way more versatile than people give it credit for.
