When we were building our place, I learned pretty quickly that builders and homeowners sometimes speak completely different languages, haha. Like, I thought I was being crystal clear about what I wanted the kitchen island to look like, but then I walked in one day and was like "...wait, what is THAT?" Turns out my description wasn't nearly as clear as I thought it was (oops).
Anyway, one thing that helped me a ton was actually sketching stuff out. I mean, nothing fancy—I can't draw to save my life—but just simple little diagrams or sketches on scrap paper. Even stick figures and arrows helped way more than trying to describe it verbally or through text alone. My builder seemed relieved too, like "thank god, finally something visual," lol.
Also, I found that taking photos of examples (Pinterest was my best friend) and showing them directly was way more effective than trying to describe the "vibe" or style I wanted. Apparently, "modern farmhouse but cozy and minimalist and kinda rustic" is NOT helpful at all. Who knew?
Curious how everyone else handles this kind of thing. Maybe you guys have some other tricks or tips that worked for you? Or maybe you had a funny misunderstanding like mine...would love to hear some good stories.
Haha, totally relate to the Pinterest thing...I swear my builder's eyes glazed over every time I said "rustic chic." Did anyone else find that physically marking things out with painter's tape helped? Saved me from a few awkward surprises...
