“her house looks amazing in photos, but she admits she’s got a cleaner who comes twice a week. The rest of us are just trying to keep toothpaste blobs off the faucet before guests come over.”

That’s the reality most folks miss. I’ve specified plenty of “statement” fixtures for clients, but honestly, when I’m picking for my own place? I go for finishes that hide the mess. Brushed nickel, satin brass—anything that forgives a little chaos. There’s no award for having the shiniest faucet if it means you’re constantly fighting about it.

Honestly, I get the appeal of forgiving finishes, but sometimes you just want that shiny faucet, even if it means wiping it down more. I built my own kitchen and went with chrome—yeah, it shows every smudge, but I kinda like the ritual of cleaning it up before folks come over. Makes me feel like the space is really mine, mess and all.

I totally get where you’re coming from. There’s something satisfying about seeing that chrome shine after a quick wipe-down, even if it means a little extra work. I went with a brushed nickel faucet in my last place because I was trying to save a few bucks and figured it’d hide fingerprints better (which it did), but honestly, it never had that “wow” factor. Sometimes I wonder if I should’ve just gone for the look I really wanted and dealt with the upkeep.

It’s cool that you see cleaning as part of making the space yours. I usually dread it, but maybe I’m looking at it wrong. There’s probably something to be said for taking pride in the mess and the cleanup, especially when you’ve put in the work to build the kitchen yourself. Makes it feel more personal, you know? Even if it means a few extra minutes with the microfiber cloth before people show up... worth it for that sparkle.

I used to think the same about brushed nickel—less hassle, but it just didn’t have the same vibe as chrome. There’s something about seeing your hard work pay off, even if it means a few more fingerprints. Honestly, I’m starting to appreciate the process more than I expected.

Honestly, I get the appeal of chrome—there’s a certain shine you just can’t fake. But after years of cleaning up after three kids and a dog (who somehow manages to leave nose prints on everything), I’ve learned to pick my battles. Brushed nickel might not have that mirror finish, but it saves me time and frustration. Sometimes, I’d rather spend those extra minutes doing literally anything else. Maybe I’m just getting old, but fingerprints have lost their charm for me...
