ARE BUILDER REFERENCES REALLY THAT HELPFUL OR JUST FLUFF?

I get where you’re coming from—sometimes those glowing, drama-free references almost sound too good to be true. But honestly, after living through a nightmare reno years ago, I’d take “boring” any day. If someone tells me the builder just showed up, did the job, and left without any fuss, that’s exactly what I want. The real red flag for me is when people have wild stories, good or bad. Quiet competence is underrated, but it’s what keeps your sanity intact.

That’s honestly how I felt too when we started our custom build last year. I was so nervous about picking the wrong builder, so I called every reference they gave me. Most were pretty uneventful—“Yeah, they finished on time, no issues”—and at first I wondered if that meant they were hiding something. But after living through the process, I totally get it now. Boring is good.

I do think references are helpful, but only if you ask the right questions. Instead of just “Did you like them?”, I asked stuff like, “Was there anything you wish you’d known before starting?” or “How did they handle unexpected problems?” That’s when you get the real info. One person mentioned the builder was great but not the best communicator, which helped us set expectations.

I guess my only hesitation is that references will almost always be positive, since no one’s going to give you a bad one. But if you listen for those little hesitations or offhand comments, you can pick up on what working with them is actually like. And yeah, if someone has a wild story—good or bad—I’d probably be more cautious. Quiet competence is way underrated.

For what it’s worth, our builder’s references were all a bit “boring,” and our build was smooth. Not exciting, but I’ll take that over drama any day.

Honestly, I’d rather have a builder who’s “boring” than one with a dramatic backstory. If the worst thing someone says is “not the best communicator,” I’ll take it. I’ve had enough excitement with contractors to last a lifetime... give me predictable any day.

I hear you, but honestly, references have saved my skin a couple times. Once, a client insisted on a guy who sounded great on paper—turns out, he left a half-finished bathroom and vanished. If I’d listened to those vague references, I could’ve dodged the headache. “Boring” is underrated in this business.

Honestly, I’ve seen both sides. Sometimes references are just a buddy vouching for someone, but every now and then you get that one honest review that saves you a ton of grief. “Not the best communicator” usually means “expect headaches,” in my experience. I’d rather have boring and reliable than flashy and flaky any day... learned that the hard way after a tile job went sideways.
