Not sure if anyone else has noticed, but fingerprints seem worse on all the eco finishes I’ve tried.
Yeah, I’ve definitely noticed that. We did matte black recycled handles in our mudroom and they look smudged 24/7. Kind of drives me nuts, honestly. I get the appeal of eco materials, but I wish they held up better to real life—kids, dogs, groceries, you name it.
We almost went with satin brass for the main floor because I liked how it looked at first, but after seeing a friend’s get all blotchy in like six months, I bailed. The “aged” thing is cool for some people but I just want hardware that looks clean without a ton of upkeep.
Durability ended up winning out for us too. Settled for brushed nickel even though it’s kind of boring. Maybe someday the eco options will catch up and offer more than just basic colors—wouldn’t mind paying extra if it actually lasted.

I hear you, but have you tried any of the newer powder-coated eco finishes? Some of them are actually pretty resistant to fingerprints, at least in my experience. I think a lot depends on the specific brand and the finish process. Matte black is notorious for showing smudges, eco or not. Sometimes it’s less about the material and more about the texture—satin or brushed surfaces usually hide a lot more than glossy or flat ones.
I’m curious if anyone’s had luck with anodized aluminum options? Those seem to hold up decently in commercial spaces, but I haven’t used them much in residential projects.
Choosing the Right Grips for Your Doors
We actually swapped out our old brass handles for anodized aluminum a couple years back, mostly because the kids kept smudging everything. I was skeptical at first—thought they'd scratch up fast—but they've held up surprisingly well. The finish is still pretty even, and fingerprints aren't nearly as obvious as they were on the matte black ones we had before. Only thing is, if you get a deep scratch, it does show, but for day-to-day wear, they've been solid. Maybe not perfect, but definitely better than some of the eco plastics we tried that got dinged up almost instantly.

I totally get what you mean about the eco plastics—tried those myself thinking I’d save a few bucks and be “green,” but they looked rough after just a few months. The aluminum ones cost a bit more upfront, but honestly, I think they’ve saved me money in the long run since I’m not replacing them every year. Plus, my kids are pros at leaving fingerprints everywhere and these handles hide it way better than anything else we’ve had. Only downside for me is when someone drags something sharp across them... then yeah, that scratch is there for good. But overall? Worth it for the price.
Aluminum’s kind of the sweet spot for me too—durable but not crazy expensive. I had a client insist on stainless for a high-traffic building and, honestly, they looked amazing but fingerprints were a nightmare. Have you ever tried powder-coated finishes? Wondering if they hold up better against scratches or if it’s just another thing that chips over time...
