Building Base Structures - What If You Had To Start Over?

I get what you mean about the small stuff, but I’m not convinced weatherstripping alone cuts it long-term. When I redid my place, I focused on the “invisible” upgrades - like proper wall insulation and air sealing from the start. Honestly, the difference in comfort and bills was night and day compared to my old patchwork fixes. Sometimes, the big investments really do pay off, even if they’re not as obvious as a drafty door.

Totally get this. I used to just slap weatherstripping on everything too, but after gutting my old place and doing proper air sealing and insulation, it was like living in a different house. One thing I’d add: don’t skip on checking for thermal bridges - those sneaky spots where heat just leaks out. It’s not always obvious, but fixing them made a bigger difference than I expected.

Yeah, thermal bridges are sneaky for sure - funny how you can do everything “by the book” and still have cold spots. One thing I found super helpful was using a cheap infrared thermometer to spot those problem areas before sealing things up for good. Also, don’t underestimate rim joists and window headers... those were the biggest culprits in my place. It’s wild how much difference a little extra attention there can make. If I had to start over, I’d map out all those potential bridges right from the framing stage and plan insulation details around them.

- Totally agree on the IR thermometer - mine’s basically paid for itself in saved headaches.
- Rim joists are sneaky, but in my case, the sill plate was the real troublemaker. Missed it the first time, paid for it all winter.
- If I had to do it again, I’d double-check every transition point... corners, wall-to-floor, all of it. It’s wild how much heat can slip out through a spot you barely notice.
- Honestly, sometimes “by the book” just isn’t enough. Gotta trust your gut and check everything twice.

Couldn’t agree more. I thought I’d done everything right, but that one cold draft near the back corner proved otherwise. Sometimes you just have to crawl around with a flashlight and double-check every inch. It’s tedious, but worth it when the first winter hits.
