Title: Building base structures—what if you had to start over?

- Ran into the same thing on my last project. Wired for everything—Ethernet, speakers, even some coax “just in case.”
- Looking back, conduit was the only thing that actually paid off. It’s not glamorous, but having those empty runs means you can pull whatever you need later.
- Honestly, most of the extra cabling is just sitting there. Wireless is moving so fast. Only exception: hardwired Ethernet in a few spots still beats WiFi for reliability, especially for home offices or media rooms.
- If I had to do it again, I’d skip most of the specialty wiring and just put in more conduit. Costs a bit more up front, but way more flexible.
- One thing I don’t regret—running power everywhere. Outlets are never where you want them, and battery-powered everything isn’t quite there yet.
- Lesson learned: future-proofing is less about guessing the next tech and more about making it easy to adapt later.

Funny how much time and money we spend on stuff that ends up obsolete within a few years...

It’s wild how much stuff changes, right? I’m just wrapping up my own build and honestly, I’ve been second-guessing every decision about wiring. Like, is it really worth running speaker wires everywhere when I mostly use Bluetooth? But then I worry I’ll regret not doing it later. I hadn’t thought about conduit being the real MVP—makes sense though. Did you find it tricky to plan where to put the conduits? I keep wondering if I’ll end up missing a spot or two. Power outlets everywhere sounds smart, though... I already wish I had more in my apartment.

Totally get that anxiety. I spent way too many hours staring at blank walls with a marker, just trying to imagine where future me might want to run wires. Planning conduit was a bit of a brain teaser—especially since I wanted to keep things as flexible as possible for upgrades (and, honestly, for stuff I haven’t even thought of yet). I ended up mapping out every wall and ceiling on graph paper, but still managed to miss a spot behind the TV. Regret that one.

About speaker wire vs Bluetooth—yeah, it’s tempting to skip the wires, but I’ve seen Bluetooth tech change so fast. I figure hardwiring at least a couple key spots is a hedge against whatever comes next. Worst case, you don’t use them, but it’s way harder to add later. Outlets, though... you can never have too many. I wish I’d put one in the pantry for the robot vacuum. Live and learn, right?

If I had to start over, I’d definitely run twice as many conduits as I think I need—future-proofing is way easier than patching drywall later. I always tell clients to put in more outlets than they think are reasonable, too. It’s wild how quickly you run out once you start plugging in vacuums, chargers, and all the “smart” stuff. I get the Bluetooth vs. hardwire debate, but honestly, nothing beats having the option for wired speakers down the line. Tech changes, but drywall headaches are forever.

- Totally agree about the outlets. I thought I was being smart by adding a couple extra, but now I’m using power strips everywhere.
- Conduits are great in theory, but my budget was tight, so I had to pick my battles. Ended up just running conduit to the living room and office—figured those would need upgrades first.
- Hardwired speakers sound awesome, but honestly, Bluetooth has been “good enough” for me so far. Maybe I’ll regret it later, but patching drywall is not in my future plans if I can help it...
- If I could do it again, I’d probably spend a little more upfront on wiring and outlets, even if it meant cutting back somewhere else. It’s just easier than trying to add stuff later.
