- That’s a rough one—old septic tanks are never a fun surprise.
- I totally get the urge to just keep moving, but pausing when something feels off is smart.
- Sometimes a quick check with a metal rod or even a call to local records can save a lot of hassle.
- Ever run into anything else weird underground, or was the septic tank the big one?

- Definitely agree on the metal rod trick—saved me from hitting an old irrigation line once.
- Found a buried chunk of concrete that turned out to be part of an old well cap. Took hours to dig around it.
- Local records helped, but they missed that one. Sometimes you just have to expect the unexpected underground.

Yeah, you never really know what’s under there until you start digging. I once helped a client redesign their backyard and we hit what looked like a random slab—turned out to be the old foundation from a greenhouse. Local records didn’t mention it at all. It’s wild how much history can be hidden just a few inches down. Makes me double-check every time now, even if the paperwork says it’s clear.

I get where you’re coming from, but I’d argue that relying solely on digging or “double-checking” in person isn’t always practical, especially for larger projects. Sometimes, ground-penetrating radar or a proper site survey can save a lot of time and surprises. Paperwork isn’t perfect, but tech’s caught up a bit—might be worth considering before breaking ground next time.

Title: Digging Up The Backyard: Found More Than Just Dirt

I hear you on the tech side—ground-penetrating radar is a game changer, no doubt. Still, I’ve seen it miss stuff, especially old pipes or random debris that paperwork never mentioned. Had a project last year where the survey said “all clear,” radar showed nothing, but we still hit an old septic tank. Sometimes, even with all the gadgets, you end up surprised. Guess there’s always a bit of risk when you start digging...
