DIGGING UP THE BACKYARD: FOUND MORE THAN JUST DIRT

You’re spot on about compacting—skipping that step is just asking for uneven surfaces down the line. I’ve seen people try to “save time” and it always comes back to haunt them, especially with our freeze-thaw cycles.

Running into buried debris is more common than most folks expect. I had a client’s patio project stall for days because we uncovered what turned out to be an old septic tank lid about 18 inches down. Not exactly a fun surprise, but better to find it before laying anything permanent. It’s frustrating in the moment, but clearing out those old bricks and concrete chunks really does pay off in the long run. You’re creating a much more stable foundation, which is key if you want things to last.

Honestly, it’s impressive you took the time to do it right, even with all the extra work. Sometimes those little setbacks are what make the finished space feel even more satisfying.

You nailed it about the freeze-thaw cycles—those can really mess with anything that isn’t properly compacted. I’ve seen patios shift a good inch or two over a winter just because someone rushed the prep. Digging up old junk is a pain, but honestly, it’s way better than dealing with a cracked slab or sinking pavers later. Sometimes I wonder what people were thinking when they buried half a demolished garage in their yard... but at least it keeps things interesting.

You’re right, dealing with old buried debris is a pain, but it’s so much better to do the hard work up front. Have you ever noticed how some folks just throw down pavers over whatever’s there and hope for the best? I always wonder if they think the ground won’t move... but nature always wins. You’ll thank yourself later for putting in the effort now.
