- Totally get where you’re coming from. That “organized chaos” in the parts bin has saved me more times than I can count.
- There’s a sustainability angle here too—reusing old hardware instead of buying new is a win for the environment and your wallet.
- I’ll admit, sometimes I wish I could find things faster, but honestly, digging through the bin usually sparks ideas for other projects. Weird how that works.
- Tossing everything just to keep things neat feels wasteful. Sure, a clean workspace is nice, but there’s value in keeping those odds and ends around.
- Only thing I’d add: maybe just a quick sort every now and then? Keeps the truly useless stuff from piling up, but still lets you hang onto the good bits.
- At the end of the day, that “junk” pile is basically a treasure chest for DIYers. No shame in that.

I get the whole “junk pile is a treasure chest” thing, but sometimes I wonder if it’s more of a time sink than a gold mine. I mean,

“digging through the bin usually sparks ideas for other projects”
—sure, but half the time I just end up distracted and forget what I was looking for in the first place. Maybe it’s just me, but I’ve found that a bit more order actually helps me finish stuff faster. Still, I get the appeal of stumbling across that weird bracket you forgot you had. It’s a balancing act, I guess.

I hear you on the “time sink” part. I’ve been there, knee-deep in the bin, thinking, “why did I keep all these random screws?” But honestly, a little organization goes a long way. Sorting stuff into small bins by type has helped me cut down on the distraction factor. Still, like you said, stumbling across that odd bracket can spark a new idea... just gotta keep it from derailing the main project. It really is a balancing act.

Funny how a random old hinge or pipe fitting can suddenly become the missing piece for something you didn’t even know you wanted to build. I get the frustration, but isn’t there something kind of exciting about that unpredictability? Sometimes the mess is where the magic starts...

Totally get what you mean about the unpredictability. I’ll admit, when I first started digging up my backyard, I was more worried about hitting a pipe than finding treasure. But now I’ve got this weird collection of old bolts and random metal bits—half of which I can’t even identify. Part of me wants to toss them, but another part thinks, “What if I need this someday?” Guess that’s how the garage ends up full of ‘future projects’...
