Title: When “Smart” Devices Aren’t So Smart After All

I get the frustration with glitches, but honestly, I’d argue the benefits still outweigh the occasional hiccup. I’ve had my fair share of issues—my smart blinds once decided to open at 3am for no reason, which was less than ideal. Still, when everything works as intended, the convenience is hard to beat. For instance, being able to check and lock up the entire house from my phone before bed? That’s a level of peace of mind you just don’t get with manual switches.

Sure, there’s a learning curve and sometimes the tech isn’t perfect. But I’d rather deal with the odd app update than go back to fumbling for light switches in the dark. Maybe it’s just a matter of finding brands that actually deliver on reliability... or maybe I’m just stubbornly optimistic about where this stuff is headed.

I hear you on the convenience—being able to monitor energy use or set schedules for lights is a game changer. Still, I wish more brands focused on open standards. Half my “smart” devices don’t talk to each other, which kind of defeats the purpose sometimes...

Honestly, I get the frustration with devices not playing nice together, but I don’t think it’s always a dealbreaker. Sometimes, picking one ecosystem and sticking with it just makes life easier, even if it means passing on a few cool gadgets. I’ve seen clients drive themselves nuts trying to get everything to sync up perfectly, when in reality, most folks just want the lights to turn off when they leave the room. Open standards would be great, but I’d rather have a system that just works—even if it’s a bit limited.

- Had a client who wanted every room to have a different brand of smart switch—looked cool, but it was chaos trying to get them to talk to each other.
- Ended up ripping half of it out and going all-in on one system. Not as many bells and whistles, but at least the shades actually closed when they were supposed to.
- Sometimes “good enough” really is better than “perfect but unpredictable.”

Had a similar mess when I tried mixing brands for my own place—figured I’d just pick whatever was on sale. Ended up with three different apps and a bunch of stuff that only worked half the time. My partner got so frustrated with the lights randomly turning on at 3am, we just unplugged half of it. Now we stick to one brand, even if it’s not the fanciest. Sometimes “simple” is underrated.
