When “Smart” Devices Aren’t So Smart After All
That’s wild—microwaves vs. smart blinds, who knew? I had a similar moment with a client’s “smart” lighting system. We spent ages picking out the perfect fixtures, only for the app to glitch every time her neighbor’s WiFi got overloaded. It made me wonder: are we designing for convenience or just adding layers of complexity? I love the idea of seamless tech, but sometimes I miss the reliability of a good old-fashioned switch.
Do you ever feel like we’re chasing innovation just for the sake of it? I get the appeal—voice controls, automated everything—but when it comes down to it, isn’t the real goal to make people feel comfortable in their own space? I’ve started asking clients how much “smart” they actually want, versus what just looks cool in a showroom. Sometimes, less really is more... or at least less likely to freak out when someone reheats soup.
