If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?

IF YOU HAD TO RIG UP YOUR OWN HOME SECURITY ON A TIGHT BUDGET, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

I actually tried the fake TV thing last winter when we went out of town for a week. Honestly, from the sidewalk it looked like someone was flipping channels in the living room. I agree, it’s not foolproof, but it’s cheap and better than just leaving the porch light on 24/7. I also put a cheap motion sensor on the back door—caught a raccoon, not a burglar, but at least I know it works. If you’re handy, even just swapping out your regular bulbs for smart ones you can control from your phone adds another layer. Not perfect, but it makes me feel a bit less paranoid when I’m away.

The fake TV trick is clever, but honestly, I get a little skeptical about relying too much on techy illusions. Here’s why:

- Energy waste: Leaving lights or fake TVs running for hours isn’t great for the power bill (or the planet). Even “energy efficient” bulbs add up if they’re on all night, every night.
- Smart bulbs are cool, but they’re still using energy when you’re not even home. Plus, if your WiFi goes down or there’s a power cut, there goes your security layer.

I lean more toward passive security—stuff that doesn’t need electricity or apps:
- Planting thorny bushes under windows. It’s low-tech but makes sneaking around way less appealing.
- Upcycling old wooden pallets into a rustic fence (looks good and it’s basically free if you can find the pallets).
- Reinforcing doors with longer screws in the strike plates—costs next to nothing, but makes a huge difference.
- Window locks from the hardware store. Not glamorous, but neither is getting your stuff stolen.

I did try a motion sensor once too—caught my neighbor’s cat staring at its reflection for like 20 minutes. Not exactly high-stakes security, but it did make me realize how many critters wander through at night.

It’s not that I’m against smart gadgets—I just think sometimes the best solutions are the ones you can build or grow yourself. And hey, less stuff to break or get hacked.

Totally with you on the passive security. I’ve seen way too many people spend a fortune on gadgets that end up collecting dust or glitching out. Honestly, nothing beats a solid door and visible deterrents. Even swapping out those tiny screws in your door hinges for longer ones is such an underrated move—most break-ins are just forced entries, not some Mission Impossible tech heist. I’d add: don’t forget about sightlines inside—move valuables out of view from windows, or use sheer curtains so you get light but not prying eyes. Sometimes the simplest changes make the biggest difference.

- Swapped out all my exterior door screws for 3-inch ones after a neighbor’s door got kicked in—cost me less than $10.
- Put up fake security cameras. Honestly, they look real enough and people think twice.
- Motion sensor lights everywhere. Not fancy, just the cheap ones from the hardware store.
- I do like a smart lock, but only if it’s reliable—some of those budget ones are more trouble than they’re worth.
- Agree on hiding valuables. I keep my watch box in a random kitchen drawer, not the bedroom. Thieves go for the obvious spots first.

Swapping out the screws is such a simple fix, but honestly, I never would’ve thought of it until I moved in and realized how flimsy those standard ones are. The fake cameras idea’s clever too—my cousin did that after his bike got taken and hasn’t had trouble since. I’m still on the fence about smart locks, though. Like you said, some of the cheaper models seem kind of glitchy... I’d rather stick with a solid deadbolt for now. And totally agree on keeping valuables out of obvious spots. I started stashing things in my laundry room cabinets—nobody’s digging through detergent boxes, right?
