If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?

Yeah, the raccoon problem is real—motion lights are just raccoon party starters at my place. I actually layered some prickly native shrubs under the windows. Not foolproof, but it slows people down and gives the house a bit of green. Plus, way cheaper than fancy gadgets.

PRICKLY SHRUBS VS. DIY ALARMS: WHICH ACTUALLY WORKS?

I get the appeal of using shrubs—nature’s own barbed wire, right? I’ve always wondered, though, do they actually stop anyone determined, or just slow them down? I’ve been eyeing some DIY alarm kits online, but part of me thinks a roll of fishing line and a few bells might do the trick for even less... Anyone tried that old-school route?

Honestly, I’ve tried the bell-and-string trick before—fun for a weekend, but anyone who’s actually up to no good will just step over or unhook it. Shrubs look tough, but unless you’re planting something really vicious (think holly or pyracantha), most people just push through. I’d actually lean toward a cheap motion sensor light or a basic wireless alarm kit. They’re not Fort Knox, but they’ll wake you up and probably scare off casual prowlers. The tech’s gotten better and prices are way down compared to a few years back.

Yeah, motion sensor lights are a game changer—caught a raccoon and a neighbor’s cat more than once, but it does make you feel safer. I also put some fake cameras up by the back door. Not perfect, but they look convincing enough in the dark. Sometimes just looking like you’ve got security is half the battle.

I get the logic, but I’d rather invest in something that actually records. Even a cheap WiFi cam inside a window can catch more than a dummy outside. Real footage beats a fake deterrent if anything ever happens.
