If you had to rig up your own home security on a tight budget, what would you do?

I’ve wondered the same thing about fake cameras. I mean, if someone’s really determined, wouldn’t they just spot a plastic lens or a blinking red light that never changes? Maybe it’s enough to deter the casual opportunist, but I’m not sure it’d fool anyone who’s actually scoping out houses.

On the solar motion lights—has anyone noticed if they actually last through the night? I’ve seen some that seem pretty dim after a few hours, especially in winter when there’s less sun. But then again, maybe it’s more about the sudden movement and light than how bright it is? I guess even a little surprise could make someone think twice.

Swapping out tall hedges for native plants is such a smart move. Less maintenance, fewer hiding spots, and you get to help out the bees and birds. I always wonder if people realize how much landscaping plays into security... It’s not just about fences and locks.

I’ve actually had a few clients ask about fake cameras over the years, and I tend to agree—anyone with a bit of know-how can spot them pretty quick. They might scare off someone just looking for an easy target, but I wouldn’t rely on them for real protection.

On the solar lights, I’ve noticed the same thing at my own place. During winter, they barely make it past midnight unless you splurge on higher-end models. But honestly, even a weak light popping on suddenly is enough to startle most people. Landscaping’s huge too—removing dense hedges made such a difference at one project. It’s wild how much more visible everything becomes, and it really does cut down on hiding spots without sacrificing curb appeal.

- I totally get the hesitation with fake cameras.

“anyone with a bit of know-how can spot them pretty quick”
—yep, my cousin called mine out in about two seconds.
- For lights, I went with a mix: cheap motion sensors by the doors and one pricier solar floodlight for the driveway. Not perfect, but it’s better than nothing.
- Landscaping is underrated. After trimming back some overgrown bushes, I realized how many blind spots I’d created without even thinking about it.
- Also, I stuck a “Beware of Dog” sign on the gate... even though my dog is 12 pounds and mostly naps. It’s all about layers, right?
