No more fumbling for keys: did you know this?
I get the convenience factor, but I’m with you - having a physical backup just makes sense. We moved into our new place last fall and the builder tried to upsell us on a keyless-only system. Looked cool, but I couldn’t shake the thought of getting locked out because of a dead battery or glitchy update. Ended up going with a hybrid lock. Not as sleek, but at least I know I won’t be calling a locksmith at midnight if the tech fails.
Honestly, I get the appeal of ditching keys, but I’m still a little wary of going fully keyless. When we built our place last year, the builder was all about the “smart everything” package - locks, lights, even the garage. Looked slick, but I kept picturing myself standing outside in the rain because the app crashed or my phone died.
We ended up with a hybrid too. Here’s how I see it: tech is great until it isn’t. Batteries die, software updates go sideways... and then what? With a physical key backup, at least there’s a plan B.
If anyone’s on the fence, my advice is to check if your lock has an override option. Some of them hide a key slot under a panel or have a backup battery port you can use in a pinch. Not as pretty, maybe, but it’s peace of mind. I’d rather have an “ugly” lock than be locked out at 2am because my phone decided to update itself.
Totally get where you’re coming from. I’ve looked at those “smart home” bundles and always wondered if the convenience is worth the risk, especially for the price. Even the budget-friendly locks aren’t exactly cheap, and if you still need to pay for a backup key system… is it really saving you money or just adding more stuff to maintain? I like your idea of checking for override options - feels like a good compromise. Have you noticed any extra costs for replacement batteries or updates? That’s the part I keep worrying might add up over time.
I’ve installed a few of these for clients, and honestly, the battery thing is real. Most locks need new batteries every 6-12 months, depending on use. Not a huge cost, but it’s another thing to remember. Firmware updates can be a pain too - sometimes you need the app, sometimes you need to be home. I’ve had one client get locked out after a failed update. Backup keys are a must, in my opinion. The tech is cool, but it’s not always as seamless as the ads make it look.
Not sure I totally agree on the backup keys being a must. I’ve had a keypad lock for two years - never once used the key. Maybe I’m just lucky, but the convenience outweighs the rare hassle for me. That said, battery anxiety is real... I keep a spare pack in the junk drawer just in case.
