NO MORE FUMBLING FOR KEYS: DID YOU KNOW THIS?

I’ve actually had a few clients ask for keypad locks just for the look, but then get frustrated when the battery dies mid-winter. One even taped a spare key under a planter as backup... not exactly secure, but I get it. Sometimes simple is just less stressful.

I get the appeal of keypad locks—no more digging around for keys in the dark or with arms full of groceries. But honestly, after moving into our new place, I started worrying about the battery thing too. I ended up setting a calendar reminder to swap batteries every six months, but it still feels like one more thing to remember. The idea of hiding a key outside just makes me nervous... seems like asking for trouble. Sometimes I wonder if a good old-fashioned deadbolt is just less hassle in the long run, even if it’s not as “smart.”

I hear you on that one. I’ve seen folks get creative with fake rocks and all sorts of “secret” spots, but honestly, if I can spot a plastic rock, so can anyone else. Keypad locks are handy, but yeah, the battery thing is real. I once got locked out of my own garage because I ignored the low battery warning—had to climb in through a window like some kind of burglar. Not my proudest moment.

That said, swapping batteries twice a year isn’t the worst chore (beats re-keying after losing your keys), but it does add another thing to the list. The old deadbolt’s got its charm—simple, reliable, and no batteries to fuss with. Still, when you’re hauling lumber or groceries, punching in a code feels pretty sweet. Maybe there’s no perfect answer... just comes down to what annoys you less.

I’ve had similar debates with myself—convenience versus reliability. I do like the idea of smart locks that let you use your phone, but then you’re at the mercy of Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. Has anyone tried those biometric fingerprint locks? Curious if they’re actually dependable or just another gadget to maintain...

I totally get the hesitation around smart locks. I’ve specified a few for clients, and honestly, the biometric ones have been surprisingly solid—at least the higher-end models. The catch is, they’re only as good as their installation and maintenance. I’ve seen people get frustrated when the fingerprint reader gets dirty or if it’s super cold outside and their hands are numb... not ideal.

But compared to relying on Wi-Fi or Bluetooth (which, let’s face it, can be flaky), biometrics feel a bit more foolproof. At least you can’t forget your finger at home, right? That said, I still keep a backup key hidden just in case—old habits die hard.

Curious if anyone’s run into issues with battery life on these things? That’s the one thing that makes me nervous about going fully keyless.
