I totally get the appeal of smart locks, but honestly, the price tag on some of those USB-rechargeable ones is wild. I looked into them last year and just couldn’t justify it for my little place. The Simplex pushbutton style is way more my speed—no batteries, no apps, just works. I do wonder, though, for folks who rent or move a lot, is it worth investing in something high-tech you might not even take with you? Or do most people just leave them behind?

Honestly, I think you’re spot on about the price—some of those smart locks cost more than my monthly groceries. I went with a mechanical lock too, mostly because I like not worrying about batteries dying when I’m in a rush. For renters, I’d be hesitant to sink money into something you might not be able to take with you or reinstall easily. It’s tempting, but sometimes simple is just less stressful.

I totally get the appeal of keeping things simple, especially with something as important as your front door. That said, I did end up splurging on a smart lock for my new place—mostly because I’m notorious for misplacing keys. The battery anxiety is real, but I figure as long as I keep a spare regular key hidden somewhere (hopefully not under the world’s most obvious doormat), I’m covered. Still, those prices are wild. Sometimes tech just feels like paying extra for a problem I didn’t have before...

Honestly, I keep looking at those smart locks and thinking the same thing—are we just inventing new headaches? I get the convenience, but the price tags are wild. And batteries dying at the worst possible time… that’s a whole new level of stress I don’t need.

I’ve stuck with a regular deadbolt and one of those cheap combo lockboxes for a spare key. Not fancy, but it works, and if something breaks, it’s not some $200 replacement. Plus, I don’t trust all these apps with my front door. Maybe I’m just old-school, but sometimes simple is better—and way cheaper. If you’re always losing keys, maybe try one of those Bluetooth trackers on your keyring? At least then you’re not locked out when the tech decides to glitch out...

NO MORE FUMBLING FOR KEYS: DID YOU KNOW THIS?

Man, I’m with you on the whole smart lock thing. I built my own house a few years back, and after all the tech I put in, the one thing I kept old-school was the front door lock. I just couldn’t get past the idea of relying on batteries for something as basic as getting inside. My buddy went all-in on smart everything, but last winter his lock froze up (battery died, naturally) and he ended up crawling through a basement window. Not exactly the “future of home security” he was hoping for.

I do appreciate the appeal of not digging around for keys, though. Those Bluetooth trackers are a solid tip—I stuck one on my work keys after losing them in a pile of lumber. Still, there’s something about a mechanical deadbolt that just feels... dependable? I guess if you’re the type who loves gadgets, smart locks are cool, but for me, simpler is just less stressful.
