- Tried DIY plumbing once—thought YouTube tutorials had me covered.
- Ended up flooding half my kitchen and paying double to fix it...
- Makes me wonder, is DIY ever really cheaper, or just luckier sometimes?

Been there myself—DIY can definitely save cash, but plumbing's one of those sneaky ones. I've found it's cheaper if you already have tools and some basic know-how...otherwise, yeah, it can bite back pretty hard.

Fair points there, but I'd argue plumbing isn't always the sneaky budget-buster it's made out to be. From my experience, the real hidden cost isn't necessarily in the tools or even the basic know-how—it's in accurately diagnosing the issue. I've seen plenty of DIYers (myself included, unfortunately) misjudge the problem and end up buying parts they didn't need or worse, causing secondary damage that costs more to fix than the original issue.

A few years back, I had a slow-draining sink and assumed it was just a simple clog. Bought a snake, some drain cleaner, and even replaced the trap underneath. Turns out, the issue was further down the line—a partial blockage in the main drain pipe. By the time I figured that out, I'd already spent money on unnecessary supplies and wasted a weekend. Eventually, I had to call in a professional anyway, and the total cost ended up higher than if I'd just hired someone from the start.

So, while DIY plumbing can definitely be cost-effective, the key is accurately assessing your own ability to diagnose and handle the problem. If you're confident in your troubleshooting skills and have a decent grasp of plumbing basics, then DIY can save you a good chunk of money. But if you're uncertain about what's causing the issue, hiring a pro upfront might actually be the smarter financial move—even if it feels counterintuitive at first.

Just my two cents based on some hard-earned lessons...

Totally relate to this. Had a similar experience when renovating my own bathroom—thought I could handle the tile work myself. Watched a bunch of tutorials, bought all the gear, and dove right in. Halfway through, realized I'd misjudged the waterproofing step and had to rip out half my work. Ended up costing double what it would've if I'd just hired someone from the start. DIY is great, but knowing your limits is key...lesson learned the hard way here too.

Definitely been there myself—DIY can be tempting, but bathroom renovations especially have hidden complexities. Waterproofing mistakes aren't just costly, they can lead to mold issues down the line. Sometimes hiring a pro upfront saves more than just money...it saves your sanity too.
